And here another shot I made at the botanical garden in Munich.

Hope you like it and have a nice weekend :)

Owl Butterflies - caligo eurilochus

Owl butterflies, of which there are around 20 different species, are members of the genus Caligo, in the brush-footed butterfly family Nymphalidae. They are found in the rainforests and secondary forests of Central and South America.

The name is derived from the presence of large "eyespots" (ocelli) on the underside of the hindwings. [...] It was speculated that the ocelli are "false eyes" to scare smaller birds that attempt to prey on the butterfly.

Owl butterflies are very large, and fly only a few metres at a time, so avian predators have little difficulty in following them to their settling place. However, the butterflies preferentially fly around dusk, when few avian predators are around. [...]

If you did not use a tripod and shot this handheld at shutter speed 1/30 and aperture value 5, you have rock-steady hands.

You managed to find and picture so attractive specimen of butterflies. Picutred scene is very nice. In spite of contrast subject you have exposed image perfectly and butterfly is represented in all its beauty. Light BG is fine too and nicely smoothed. My best wishes and TFS. Well done.

Hi Tatjana,

Great close-up of this Owl Butterfly. Very good sharp details, good composition, DOF, POV and nice natural colours. If I have to come with critique, the BG brightness is slightly disturbing, it could smoother. You could fix that in postprocessing by handling the BG separately.
