Er ist in den milderen Regionen Europas und Asiens zu finden, außerdem im gesamten südlichen Afrika mit Ausnahme der südlichen Küstennamib. In überwiegend eisfreien Regionen ist er ein Standvogel, in den anderen Gebieten zieht er im Winter weiter südlich. In Deutschland ist er überwiegend ein Standvogel. In strengen Wintern, bei denen viele freie Wasserflächen einfrieren, sind die Verluste der Population sehr hoch.
Der Graureiher hält sich besonders gerne an seichten, durchwachsenen kleinen Tümpeln und Teichen auf, die möglichst umbuscht und umwaldet sind.
In neuster Zeit dringt er immer mehr in städtische Gebiete vor, wo er heute sogar oft in den Innenstädten beobachtet werden kann. Er bildet auch gemeinsame Gruppen mit Seidenreihern (wie zum Beispiel in der Poebene in Norditalien). |

Hello Siggi,
I never seem to succeed in capturing a Heron, as soon as they see me they fly off!! I'd be very happy to get a fine capture like this with the Heron sharply in focus! I like the composition too although I would probably have cropped it a little more on the right to place it off-centre (the rule of thirds common in photography) or maybe you could have included the reflection in the water too. Nevertheless, very well done!

hello Siggi, excellent work to get the reflection, the diagonal bank gives interesting perspective. I have a heron where I live and have failed to capture it!!!...regards h

Hola Siegfried
Buena fotografia de esta Ardea cinerea que tambien se deja ver con frecuencia aquí en rios y charcas. Un amigo mio que tiene un pequeño estanque de carpas doradas en su jardín ha tenido que ponerle una red al estanque para protegerlo de las garzas y evitar que le comieran los peces.
