The Six-spot Burnet (Zygaena filipendulae) is a day-flying moth of the family Zygaenidae. It is a common species throughout Europe.
The sexes are similar and have a wingspan of 30-40 mm. The forewings are dark metallic green with 6 vivid red spots (sometimes the spots are merged causing possible confusion with other species such as Five-spot Burnet). Occasionally the spots are yellow or even black. The hindwings are red with a blackish fringe. The adults fly on hot, sunny days from June to August [1] and are attracted to a wide variety of flowers such as knapweed and scabious as well as the larval food plants bird's foot trefoil and clover. The species overwinters as a larva.
The larva is plump and hairy with variable markings, usually pale green with rows of black spots. It pupates in a papery cocoon attached to foliage.

Hi Siegfried!

You present us a marvellous picture of this moth. The clours are superb and the great sharpness shows a lot of details. The picture is well accompanied by instructive notes.

Kind regards

Hallo Siegfried,
du zeigst ein super-vergrößertes 'Blutströpfchen' in seinen originalen natürlichen Farben
aus einem zudem gut ausgewählten Blickwinkel. Die Tiefenschärfe könnte etwas 'breiter' sein. Angesichts dder 1/500 sec

Czesc Siggi!

Dzisiaj bardzo ladna i bardzo trujaca cma :-) Czarno-czerwony mix kolorow wyglada swietnie, owad wyrazny i pokazany z dobrej perspektywy. Z fioletowym kwiatem tworzy naprawde zabojcza pare :-)

Hi Siggi,

A beautiful moth settled on a pretty flower. I have never seen one such as this with the metallic wings and the wonderful spots. Colors and details are excellent. I would love to see one with the wings opened.

Jane

Hi Siegfried,
The contrasts here couldn't be any better.
It's so enjoyable the way these colors work together, a very singular palette for sure.
The soft background helps to focus the attention on the insect.
Congratulations and thanks for share.
My best regards,
JM

Helo Siggi,
A very fine capture of this Burnet showing the beautiful shiny wings clearly. Beautiful colours only the DOF is a bit shallow. A beautiful background to set it off and well composed.
Many thanks, Ulla
