...and now for something interesting.


I was quite thrilled when i saw a pair of Egyptian Geese
swimming on the Rhine in cologne in april.

Yesterday i was back there, "hunting" for ducks and
waders, and i saw them again, this time they there
were 7 of them - 2 adults and 5 juveniles.

It seems that these neozoons (invasive animals) have
slowly formed a stable population along the rhine from the 1980s on.

The Egyptian Goose (Alopochen aegyptiacus) is a member
of the duck, goose and swan family Anatidae. It is in
the shelduck subfamily Tadorninae, and is the only
extant member of the genus Alopochen.

This 63-73 cm long species breeds widely in Africa
except in deserts and dense forests, and is locally
abundant. They are found mostly in the Nile Valley and
south of the Sahara. It has also been introduced
elsewhere; Great Britain, the Netherlands and Germany
have self-sustaining feral populations, the former
dating back to the 18th century, though only formally
added to the British list in 1971. In Britain, it is
found mainly in East Anglia, in parkland with lakes.

The sexes of this striking species are identical in
plumage, though the males average slightly larger.
There is a fair amount of variation in plumage tone,
with some birds greyer and others browner, but this is
not sex or age related.

Egyptian geese typically eat seeds, leaves, grasses,
and plant stems. Occasionally, they will eat locusts,
worms, or other small animals.

Hi Thorsten,

nice shot from thes Nile geese.
Indeed the population grows in the Netherlands with 17% each year.
Fine saturated colours.

Die Enten (Egyptian Goose) sind ganz schön dick aber drollig. Die Aufnahme ist sehr gut gelungen, besonderes weil die Lichtverhältnisse einfach stimmen. Gut gemacht.

A beautiful family of Egyptian Geese coming right towards you. You captured the whole group with natural colors and excellent details. The eyes, beaks and feathers are wonderful. A fine composition of them in the inviting looking water.

Hi Thor,
A great arrangement of this Egyptian goose family.
I have never seen the juveniles of his species.
The light is beautiful, and the details very sharp.
I like that each goose is actually facing you at a different angle,
but you can see the eyes of each one.
