Goura scheepmakeri
Southern Crowned-pigeon
Scheepmakers Kroonduif (Dutch)
A large ground pigeon which, like its congeners, suffered from fragmentation and cutting of forest, overhunting, and capturing for the cage-bird trade. This species occurs in the lowland forests of southern New Guinea, with ssp. sclaterii (with grey upper wing-coverts, a light grey wing-bar, and a rufous vent) in the south-west east to the Fly River and nominate scheepmakeri (with maroon upper wing-coverts, a largely white wing-bar, and a grey vent) further east. |
