The Red Squirrel, Sciurus vulgaris, is a common European tree squirrel. It is still frequently found on the European continent and across Asia but has been widely replaced by the Eastern Grey Squirrel in Great Britain. They are small tree-dwelling omnivorous rodents.

Appearance and physiology

Red Squirrels have a typical body length of 19-23 cm and mass of 250-340g when fully grown (compare with the 25-30cm, 400-800g of the Eastern Grey squirrel), and have a tail which can be up to 20 cm long itself, almost as long as the body. It is thought that this helps the squirrel to balance and steer when jumping from tree to tree and running along branches and keep the animal warm during sleep.

The coat of the red squirrel varies in colour with time of year and location. There are several different coat colour morphs ranging from black to red. Although only red coats are found in Great Britain, in other parts of Europe and Asia the different coat colours co-exist within populations, much like hair colour in humans. The underside of the squirrel is always white-cream in colour. Red Squirrels shed their coats twice a year, switching from a thinner summer coat to a thicker, darker winter coat with noticably larger ear-tufts (a prominent distinguishing feature of this species) in August-November. A lighter, redder overall coat colour, along with the larger ear-tufts helps to distinguish the European Red squirrel from either the Grey squirrel or the American Red Squirrel, Tamiasciurus hudsonicus.

The red squirrel, like most tree squirrels, has sharp, curved claws to enable the climbing of trees, even when branches are overhanging.

Their lifespan is about 2-3 years.

Amazing photo, details are stunning great colours. Very well done.

Simply beautiful - Squirrel and all your photo as well.
I love this compositon and light. You've captured great pose here. This little fellow looks really nice covered with his tail.
Well done!

This is what mine should of been if somebody had not imported the grey.
This is superb the details and lighting look spot on, if there was anything to say it would be for me a little tight behind cutting off some of the hair, but this is avery minnor nit.
Out of points today

I missed all my shots this morning, but it seems that yours are very good.
Very good sharpness.
Well done.

It s a very nice picture, where have you taken this picture, in the forrest, in a garten. Very good shot

IMO, the eastern grey, kill the red. We are lucky, Manitoulin Island does not have the grey, that's why the red is abundant here, yet the rest of ontario has the grey.
Excelent work and details. Well done on the composition.

Thank you for posting this amazing shot-well done

Philip, Excellent work shown again here today. The only element that steals a tiny bit from your perfect photo is that bit of fur that got away..albeit a very tiny bit! ;-)

Bravo Philip.

What a lovely red Squirrel Philip. We don't have them in NZ. In fact, NZ has NO native mammals. (Oops, maybe a bat!?)
Very crisp and clear shot. Colours and compo perfect.

Philip, you have used the EOS300D to perfection with this shot.
There is nothing to critique, its beautiful.

One could add, very little after so many but points ...

rien a dire a part parfait !

Excellent work Phillip, your quality seems to improve post by post. Congratulations. *****

Hi Philip
This is a true beauty, no nits, the pelt and texture is just wonderful.

A question - the wiskers sometimes have a "strange" look, like the one that looks like a dotted line - I get the same with mt cats, what is causing this, do you know, and how does one fix it - I could never yet do it in PS. I had the same on slides as well.

Philip, amazing POV to show us this beautiful moment. Sharpness and DOF are perfect, as usual. Nice colors.

Let me ask you: did you blur the BG? If so, how did you select the so detailed fur of the animal?

Best regards.

With the help of light very warm shot!
Squirrel is very cute
TFS

This picture is so cute!!!! The new owner of my ex house, cut down all the trees. So not only am I "homeless", so are my squirrelly freinds that used to share my yard. They were such charecters, attacking cats all the time, tempting them! One day, one got so carried away hanging upside down to tempt the cats, he fell out of the tree, and knocked himself out. The cat ignored him...

WOW what a fantastic shot....congratulations

I love these red squirrels, I had never seen them before joining TN. I think the way he's posed, with nut, and the branch with the tail over his head is PERFECT. The color is warm, the background soft. Excellent.

This is an excellent shot of this lovely squirrel. The details are perfect. From the point of view, it looks like you were up in the tree with him. Congratulations on your achievement.

This is really a great picture. The lighing, pose, sharpness. It is one of the best squirrel photos I have seen.

This is a great image Philip. I got a shot myself today but only of a grey squirrel and not as nice as this. The colour and detail are superb and I love your composition :)

Fantastic image! It reminds me of a picture I saw at the hotel where I stayed on holiday recently, and when I looked at it i thought to myself "what a lucky (and skillful) photographer to capture something as perfect as that". Well, yours is actually better.

Well done,
Shelly.

Nice shot!
Great colors, composition, pov and details.

Awesome clarity and crisp shot. Good DOF. Amazed that it was sitting in 1 place and not hopping around!

fantastic detail and colours. I used to live in The Lake District in England with these little fellows and it instantly reminded me of then.

The detail and sharpness is stunning. and the composition as everyone else has mentioned is spot on.

Well done.

Hi Philip
Really excellent capture of a beautiful animal.
Very clear and sharp result.
Thanks.

WOW WOW WOW! Wat a great picture of clear and sharp details! I love that the squirrel is minding it's own business. And the pose/position it is in must makes the picture so interesting. The branch (line) actually directs our eyes to the squirrel. Good colors. :) Thanks for this magnificent picture!

I love Red Squirrels and this shot, because it's got amazing sharp details, great DOF, brilliantly effective blurred background and perfect composition, I'd say it definitely a favourite!!:)

Extremely well done,

Excellent shot! The diagonal branch, the way the squirell is seating, the colours, all look amazingly beautiful. Compliments on such a fine shot.
