Species identification
- Agriopis leucophaearia
- family: Geometridae

This moth species is specifically found during the winter months with a peak occurrence in February. A few specimens can be found also in January and some more in March.
Caterpillars feed in mai on Salix caprea and Quercus-species and are rarely found.

Distribution: Europe and estwards to Russia, Caucasus
Wing span: about 27 mm
I found this specimen resting at a wall obviously attracked by light.

Quite an interesting species, Peter.
I too have some pictures of moths on walls, shot at night in artificial light. Might share one or two after looking at this fairly impressive picture of yours shot in similar conditions.

Guten Abend, Peter,
beeindruckend klare, detailreiche, natürlich wirkende Darstellung dieses kleinen Spanners, den sicher noch nicht viele von uns bewusst zu Gesicht bekommen haben - erstaunlich die Schärfe bei dieser langen Belichtung aus der Hand.
Bis etwa um die Weihnachtszeit konnte ich drei verschiedene Arten von Spannern an unseren Hauswänden am Waldrand beobachten, doch zur Zeit scheint bei uns nichts mehr oder noch nichts zum Licht zu fliegen.

Nice photo and an informative note! :) Isects active during the winter are well known but I did not expect that there is any moth species active as imago only in winter time!
