This week-end I found something I never expected to find in Germany : a Canada Goose ! I really didn't know they were living wildly in my area, I thought they were living only in North America. I was so happy that I couldn't stop smiling for the whole day ! :-)

In fact there were approximately 30 geese on this single river, in small groups of 3, 4 or 5. Some of them were swimming, others were eating grass or simply laying on the ground. They were so noisy that we heard them long before we actually saw them.

In the past I only saw these birds in the wildlife park, they were used to Humans and very familiar with them, but these wild geese were much more shy, and much more difficult to get close to. I walked on meter, then stopped, one meter again, until I got close enough to capture them with my 55-200 lense. It took a lot of time but I was really happy.

I also want to add that I was walking in the mud, almost to my ankles, to get this picture - fortunately I was wearing my boots so my feet did not get too wet and muddy ! :-)

The picture is a bit over-exposed on the white parts, but I really like the pose of the goose, looking at me over her back. Looks like she was asking me what I was trying to do with her. And I was so excitedabout having found these canada Goose that I HAD to post a picture here, because for mesharing is as important as taking the picture.

I hope you enjoy the picture !

Hi Valerie,
You had to cope with hard sunlight.
So there's a lot of contrast; little detail in the black neck for instance. On the other hand the eye light is beautiful.
A good compo!
Well done overall...
Annick

Hello Valerie,
A wonderful goose portrait!
I think the bird seems a bit irritated by being photographed from behind..?
The Canada goose is quite common in Northern Europe, has been so for some years and seem to be very happy with the conditions here...
A very attractive birdy portrait!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Superbly capturing this goose.
Sharp and neat image.
Great shot.

Even if you had to wade knee deep in mud to get this image, you would still be a winner, Valerie :-)!
The goose looking back at you with an expression of surprise on its face actually seems to be admiring you for your perseverance and fortitude!
Adorable image captured with perfect utilization of the ambient light. The effects, including the OE whites, are magical.
Well done and TFS.

Hi Valerie.
I have read your interesting note with great gladness for you. As you know I had taken some pictures of these gooses but not wild. Since that time, I have loved them. That is why I understand your feeling. Your shot is really excellent despite some OE. Great pose and eye contact, amazing blurred BG and so on. This is great meeting which you will remember on all life. BRAVO and best wishes.
Alexei.

A very amusing title for this lovely image! Great colours and details (amazing how it almost blends in with the dull colours of the water)

Hola Valerie,
Una pose y una composición realmente buenas y una luz bellísima. Sí que suena raro un ganso canadiense en Alemania!
Saludos, José M.

Hi Valerie,

Nice to see you are still here and still taking pictures! Canada geese are great. They are a hated species in Europe, being considered an alien invasive species, but I happen to like them, especially their melancholic calls in the early morning, with the mist still on the water...

bonjour valerie
j'aime beaucoup l'attitude de cette oie qui regarde dans votre direction.
bonne lumiere,c'est bien fait.

Hi Valerie

I took a small look over your gallery and saw that i didn't comment this lovely post of yours.
I must say that you really have a special way of looking at things and always manage to get the best composition out of things.
This photo is a great example for that and all the propertions from here are wonderful.
Even if in this difficult lighting you overexposed certain very small parts, this portrait of this lovely Canada Goose is still cahrming.
The details are terrific and the colors are very beautiful.
The DOF you chose here is also excellent and manages to isolate your subject very nicely from the blurred BG.

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hello Valerie,
I have browsed through you gallery and you have awesome collection of nature pictures. This one is brilliant as the others. Superb details and clarity in perfect dof. Very well done.
Best regards,
