[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Why such a strage title, you would ask...
Well, the animal I present is the answer. This summer with some friends I went for an expedition to Greece and on one of our camping sites we discovered this lovely creature. It was resting under the stone, right in the place where we were going to place our sleeping matts. Of course, after finding this guy we checked carefully all other stones within 15m circle. At first I thought it's Buthus occitanus, one of the more dangerous scorpions in Europe but when I got back home and identified the photographed specimen, the truth appeared to be even more thrilling. The scorpion is:

Mesobuthus gibbosus gibbosus (Brullé, 1832)
Family: Buthidae

The species inhabits Mediterranean Europe. It prefers hot and dry habitats, particularly olive plantations and stony pastures. It doesn't dig hiding holes but rest under stones and logs. Adults may grow up to 8 cm.

It's also very aggressive species. When approached, it attacks and then escapes. It's venom is lethal for children and old people. But even when you are a healthy adult, you don't want to be stung. According to what I read it causes high fever, tremor, as well as uncontrolled defecation and urination which last for at least a week....

Now you understand? Oh, by the way - we didn't kill the scorpion. We arrested it for the night in a plastic jar and let free in the morning...

The species may be differentiated from Buthus occitanus by the very clear keeled and dark stripes on the cephalothorax and mesosome.

Witam!
Co za obrzydliwy tytul! ;) hihihi! No ale po przeczytaniu notki, wszystko jest jasne. Mieliscie niezlego farta, taki ciekawy gatunek... Szukalem skorpionow w Grecji wielokrotnie, ale nic w tym roku nie udalo sie znalezc :( Moze nastepnym razem, albo gdzie indziej?
Swoja droga bardzo ladna fotka :)

Hi Michal,
a great macro for Mesobuthus gibbosus. Using flash light very good and so we can see all details. Nicely composed and sharply focused. POV and frame also great.
I also posted its shot from Turkiye, with single difference. Ours is from second subspecies, M. g. anatolicus. This must be nominative subspecies, M. g. gibbosus.

Jak przeczytalem tytul to myslalem ze padne ze smiechu ;-) Fotka faktycznie swietna i musze przyznac ze fotki z lustrzanek daja sie obrabiac w PS w niesamowity sposob w porownaniu do aparatow kompaktowych (pokazywales mi oryginal i jaj tez ma juz pierwsze doswiadczenia) Ladne, ostre kontrastowe zdjecie i ciekawe nasycone kolory (czy nie za bardzo nasycone?)

Czesc Michal.
No to mieliscie niezla przygode, reprezentuje sie naprawde dobrze, ladny okaz. Tez w 95 (ale czas leci) jechalismy do grecji, do Prowatiny (studnia jaskiniowa -400m), ale z jakis przyczyn mnie nie wpuscili, dwa tygodnie sam spedzilem w Bulgarii w Pirynie. Wracajac do zdjecia, bardzo dobra ostrosc i ziemiste kolory.

Hi Michal

It’s great to see animals like this on TN, too and I know that we can always rely on the Polish team of zoologists to bring us more and more interesting information.
I’ve always liked scorpions (maybe because I’m a Scorpio myself :)) and it’s really great to actually see more and find out more about these fascinating creatures.
The details here are excellent, the colors of the subject are very well reproduced and the upper POV shows the pattern on its back well, too. The DOF is terrific as well, keeping good focus on the tip of the tail, too where it’s very nice to see that impressive needle.
