The word snail is a common name for almost all members of the molluscan class Gastropoda that have coiled shells.
The word mollusc is derived from the French mollusque, which originated from the Latin molluscus, from mollis, soft. Molluscus was itself an adaptation of Aristotle's (Greek) malakia or malacia "the soft things", which he applied to cuttlefish. The scientific study of molluscs is known as malacology.
