Wood Sandpiper (Tringa glareola). A small wader related to the Redshank. It is found across much of Europe in spring and summer, and migrates to Africa and southern Asia (especially India) in winter. You are more likely to see this species by fresh water than the sea, where it probes muddy areas for invertebrates.
I saw this bird at the Ayia Reservoir near Hania, Crete. I was surprised at how close I was able to get - this shot is uncropped.
