Yellow Swallowtail (Papilio machaon).

kingdom: Animalia
phylum: Arthropoda
subphylum: Hexapoda
class: Insecta
order: Lepidoptera
superfamily: Papilionoidea
family: Papilionidae
subfamily: Papilioninae

The Yellow Swallowtail is one of the biggest butterflies found on the island of Crete, reaching a wingspan of up to 10cm. It is also one of the most beautiful, too, don't you agree? I found this one basking in the rays of the autumn sun, perched on a Sea Squill (Urginea maritima).

This very common species is present throughout the entire Palearctic region through Russia to China and Japan (including the Himalayas and Taiwan) and across into Alaska and Canada. In Asia it is reported as far South as certain oases in Saudi Arabia and Oman and the high mountains of Yemen. Unlike other swallowtails, this species specialises in using plants of family Umbelliferae, like wild carrot (Daucus carota), wild angelica (Angelica sylvestris), fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) and hogweeds (Heracleum spp).

Hello Stavros,
Lovely capture of this Swallowtail, sharp, with fine BG and well presented.
I wonder if this is the second generation?
You probably see them in May on Crete as well.
TFS, best wishes, Ivan

Hello Stavros,
A lovely Swallowtail. Very nice shot with great exposure and sharpness. Beautiful color saturation and blurry background that add dimension.

Hello Stavros,
A classic shot of the Swallowtail, very sharp showing details and colours very well. I wonder how common they are on Crete? Nice composition and it really stands out from the background.

Gracias y saludos... Ricardo

Nice macro Stavros with good sharpness and focus, with appropriate F4 that offers the focus on the butterfly and necessary OOF on the bottom.
The colors are intense with correct definition of the black ones.
Personally and without knowing the original image, I have rotated the frame lightly (20° for example) to break up with the symmetry and centralization of the butterfly.
Anyway, another interesting presentation.
Thank you and greetings... Ricardo

Hello Stavros,
Your photo is really vibrating!
Not only for the contrast of the buterfly's colors, but as well creates a kind of cinetism on the tiny spots lights over the intense black of the wing.
For the background, it seems it have a kind of movement or motion blur.
The details are good on the whole body of the insect.
The composition is a simple one but works fine to show the insect.
Best regards,
JM
