Red-veined darter (Sympetrum fonscolombii) immature male.
kingdom: Animalia
phylum: Arthropoda
subphylum: Hexapoda
class: Insecta
order: Odonata
suborder: Anisoptera
family: Libellulidae
I found this one on 22/Aug/06, perched right outside my house! OK, I live on the outskirts of the city (that is Iraklion, Crete, Greece), but I never thought I'd find a dragonfly here. There is a stream nearby, but at that time of year it should be dry...
Anyway, this is a Sympetrum fonscolombii, no other European species has the red wing venation and blue bottom halves of the eyes (source:www.libellen.nl/europa). It's a common species in southern Europe. You can tell it's a male, from the secondary genitalia seen under the 2nd abdominal segment (thanks Kevin Seo - undoredo - for pointing that out). This one is immature. Compare its colors with this fully-matured adult to see the difference.
Click here for more photos of the same species in my Flickr photostream.
PS. I know there is an obvious flaw in this photo: too much noise in the blue sky! If anyone owns a noise filter (like Noise Ninja, for example) and have the time to spare, feel free to post a workshop. Thanks! |

Hello Stavros,
interesting, nice and difficult point of view. Focus and depth of field are pretty good. Details of head, body, legs and wings are clearly visible. The uniform background does not distract from the dragonfly, it underlines the outlines of the insect and leaves the wing venation very clear. Sharpness could be slightly higher (see workshop to compensate with respect to sharpness and backround noise!).
Best wishes, Peter

Hello Stavros,
Lovely pose of S. fonscolombii.
Delicate details, very nice POV, Clean BG,
I love this shot very much!! :-)
Thanks for sharing this photo and happy new year!!
Regards,
Kevin
Peter (batu) has done a good job in his workshop. I would use NeatImage, free to download and easy to use for the noise. I think Photoshop is the best software for editing, its sharpnening tools have been tested by many magazines and always comes out the winner.
Cool looking dragon. You can try to do some editing yourself and then repost the shot.
cheers
Chris
