I photographed this spider on my parents' barbeque, built outside their house, in the countryside near the village of Fodele, on the island of Crete, in Greece. Apparently she had chosen the chimney as her home, but as soon as I got a fire going she was startled by the flames and smoke and fled the chimney fast, nearly buring herself in the process. I first spotted her when she fell from the chimney, landing on top of hot coals, but quickly scuttling away, apparently unscathed. As soon as she got at a safe distance from the fire, the spider stopped to rest and that's where I had the chance to photograph her.
There was little light so I had to use the built-in flash, but I held a piece of paper in front of it to diffuse the light. The camera was only 10cm away from the spider (minimun focusing distance for my Canon PowerShot S45). After the photo session, I got busy broiling the pork chops, which was the reason to light the fire in the first place. When I was done, I noticed the spider was gone...
This spider was really big, having a body length of about 15-20mm and really long legs, as is evident in the picture. What appears to be dust attached to her hairy legs is actually ash from the fire.
ID?
From her eye configuration (as seen on this other photo I uploaded on Flickr), it looks like a member of the Agelenidae family. I think it's some species of Tegenaria, but I'm no expert. What do you think? |

This is a big, hairy and long-legged spider which you have captured well after it got iself almost barbequed, Stavros :-)!
I like your story about your confrontation with this creature.
Thanks.
