Ophrys cerastes
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
The most widely distributed species of oestrifera group in continental Greece, which seems to exist also in Cyklades islands. The lip has a length of about 1cm, the petals are usually very small, while the ratio between stigmatic cavity width and lip's largest width is about 45%.Close to the northern borders, it is mixed with or replaced by Ophrys bicornis, while in the west (Epiros) it coexists with Ophrys sepioides. Polytypic species with many varieties, some with very small lips (var. minuscula) and others with earlier flowering time. The flowering time of the typical continental form is from the end of April - early June.

wow it seems the west of greece holds a whole different set of orchids then Lesvos and chios!
nice shots, I especially love the helenae. During the harsh daylight hours I usually use a reflector disk to avoid harsh shadows in the orchid. I can really recommend that

Excellent capture Anita and Mike!
The colours and the sharpness are perfect. And it is not easy to have it with two flowers. Congratulations,
Catherine
