The region of Zagori
Zagori is a favourite destination for winter holidays in Epirus for the Greeks and for travellers from abroad as well. All the villages have maintained their traditional character with the stone built houses, the cobble-stoned alleys and the roofs covered with black stone.
In Zagori due to the soil morphology, and also the numerous settlements, the need for constructing a communication network between villages soon appeared. So, hundreds of stone bridges were built and a network of cobble-stoned footpaths were constructed, creating a unique network of communication, which is preserved in excellent condition until today.
The old mansions, the traditional architecture of Zagori, the watermills, the untouched landscape and the rare fauna and flora of Zagori create unique scenes.
The region has a very rich fauna and flora. Above 100 species of birds, many from which are infrequent (gypaetos, chrysaetos, ornio etc), above 25 species of mammals, with certain infrequent animals (bear, wolf, ling etc), above 1.800 species of plants, certain from which are very infrequent or are found only in this region and nowhere elsewhere in the world. |
