The Grey Heron/Ardea cinerea
heron: erodios-ερωδιός Greek word
in the local dialect stahtotsiknias(stahtis-grey,tsiknias-heron)

certain information from Greek Ornithological Company:
90-100 cm tall, with a 175-195 cm wingspan and a weight of 1-2 kg, is the bigger heron of Europe,
it expand in all Europe, in Greece all per year.
It distinguishes from the grey on part,the white head and long neck,the long black plume behind the head,
the wide black striation from the eye as the end of his plume,the straight, long, pointed yellow beak.
Male and female is same.
Voice: husky “kriek”, drowned cries and rattle of beak.
Make nests at colonies in trees or in reeds thicket.
It is nourished with fishes, ranunculida, worms, snails, mice.
It has characteristic disposal, striking the feathers slowly and strongly,
while his neck is gathered and the legs stretching behind.

I photographed this scene next to the lake Kerkini in the fields that are found in her south-western side,
in a region where experimental placed columns,in order to make the storks their nests,
unsuccessfully.
The Grey Heron likes to be in a revery,sat in rocks, tops of trees, but also columns,
as in this in the photo, before it is bothered and flies,
it is easily bothered and is not approached.

Unfortunately the focus became more in the back part of body and the legs,
however selects this capture for the pose of heron.

Hello Nasos,
A very nice action shot showing the movement of the body when a Grey Heron takes off. The neck strectches out before being drwan back during flight and this is shown well with fine sharpness and lighting and from a great POV.

all heavens, that can be said of this photo?

have structure, movement, complexity, light, dynamism and presence. The time was very accurate, the bird off delivery pose a real impact. It would talk about the technique, the result is miraculously perfect. An unusual work!

Perfectly timed capture of this heron takeoff. The skeletal appearance of the bird with a portion of the aged wooden platform to the left, I find very interesting and artistic. Lighting is wonderful. TFS Nasos... :)
