[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I shot this Scarce Swallowtail (Iphiclides podalirius) last year at one of the ruins of an amphitheater in Dion, Greece. I know that she's missing a tassle, but hey, with these creatures, you can't pick and choose.

The left wing is a little blown out, much to my chagrin, but the pic is sharp enough in any case.

Scarce Swallowtails are less common than their friendly neighbours the Swallowtail (Papilio Machaon). The underlying color of the wings is more white, and they do not have horizontal stripes on their wings. The tails are longer as well.

These butterflies are quite common south of the Alps, and they fly from February to September. North of the Alps, they are quite uncommon. I've seen them once or twice in the Netherlands, but that's about it. They fly in May and July only, then.

A common butterfly in Portugal too.
Here, we call it "Papilio raiado ou zebrado" because of the rays on the wings. It's one of the biggest ropaleocero in europe, after the Charaxes jasius.
