Dolichophis caspius,(Gmelin, 1789)
Common name: Large Whip Snake
Synonyms: Coluber caspius , Hierophis caspius
Distribution:
Greece, FYROM, S.Slovakia, Hungary, S and E Romania, European Turkey, Bulgaria, Albania, Montenegro
General Information:
Non-venomous. Total length rarely up to 200cm and in extreme cases 250cm. Diurnal snake that stays active even in high temperatures. It occurs at altitudes from the sea level up to 1600m. A common swift snake that hunts its prey, sometimes climbs high up on trees when hunting. It feeds on rodents and lizards, but also on other snakes and birds. It will defend strongly if threatened by raising its body, hissing loud and pretend attacking. It will bite if caught or stepped on. Young individuals may be confused with Balkan Whip Snake (Hierophis gemonensis). It is often killed by traffic on road. A harmless snake.
Protected by "Council Directive 92/43/EEC of 21 May 1992" and "Bern Convention"
