The Dalmatian Pelican /Pelecanus crispus
a young male, photographed in the delta of river Strimonas, in the lake Kerkini, from boat

his different colours:
is still grey and brown in the body (as soiled white the down part),
the bag in the beak still yellow (no red as the adult male this season),
the eyes have still grey and white ocular skin

Dalmatian Pelican is the largest of the pelicans,
averaging 160-180 cm in length,
11-15 kg in weight and 3-3.20 m in wingspan.
Like the White Pelican, this species has declined greatly
through habitat loss and persecution.

As of 1994, there are around 1,000 breeding pairs in Europe,
most of them in Russia, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria and Albania,
today the bigger colony finds in Greece in the lake Small Prespa,
When it began the program of protection Dalmatian Pelican in lake Prespa,
the type belonged in “being in danger”, with population roughly 40-165 pairs.
Today, after thirteen years of insistences of efforts
(with the decisive contribution of WWF Greece, the Greek ornithological company,
volunteers and other organisations),
the lake entertains bigger in the world colony Dalmatian Pelicans with more from 1.100 pairs!

Winter Dalmatian Pelicans migrate and overwinter mainly in the lake Kerkini.
In the past few year his population in the lake Kerkini is increased continuously,
each reproductive period we have roughly 70 nestlings,
this means that it does not overwinter but certain pairs
they remain the summertime and are repeated,

how became this:
The intervention of WWF Greece existed particularly important
for the maintenance of type
Via the programs of voluntary work of organisation,
began the summertime 2002 a effort for the facilitation make nests
and reproduction of this infrequent birds with the manufacture
and placement of wooden platforms
in the natural islands of lake. The platforms were placed thus,
so that they even exceed the level of water of lake at her maximum limits,
with result the nests Dalmatian Pelicans are not in danger from the fluctuation of his level.
This efforts have been crowned up to today with success, and thus Dalmatian Pelicans
they have found one still part in order to makes nests and repeated in our country!

in September that comes, they will be repaired and will grow the nests,
a opportunity if you want to visit the lake and voluntarily to help in the work…

thank you for your visit in my collection

have a nice day and good photographs!

My time is so limited but I cannot pass this beautiful image. The photograph as a whole comes across to peaceful and has a soothing effect on the being. You have captured this large but ever so lovely bird with great clarity, showing the detail of the feathers and that enormous bill so beautifully. This Dalmatian Pelican looks so graceful in the water. Thanks for sharing. Best regards. Anna

Hi Nasos,

Good catch, very striking and balanced. Congratulations, optical adjustment is excellent. I think you've achieved a fantastic result. The composition is perfect. I like the division level of the fund, the bank with a good height and perfect fade. Everything is a product you've selected a good angle of capture. The details of the bird are supreme. With a light level needed to sustain the details of plumage.

Very good job. Excellent result!

Jesús

Hello Nasos,
This is a superb capture of a juvenile Dalmatian Pelican, a rare species. I like the low POV taken with fine sharpness and lighting against a wonderful OOF natural BG that gives a hint of the biotope.
The composition is perfect. Infact I cannot find anything negative about this image.
Thank you my friend and all the best,
Ivan
