1) Ardea cinerea, the biggest heron's species in Europe (it reaches 91 cm. in length). It lives in groups by the water on trees or in swamps and is fed with fish, mice, worms, frogs and snails.
2) Egretta garzetta. It lives in marshes, shallow fresh and coastal waters, usually breeding in trees and near water.
Here, in lake Kerkini's western shore. The lake was formed in 1932, when a dam was built on Strymon river. It is the wildlife-richest habitat in Greece and one of the ten water-reserves protected by Ramsar Treaty.
