Dragon Arum or Voodoo Lily (Dracunculus vulgaris var creticus). This spectacular member of the arum family is native to the Balkans, Greece and other areas around the Mediterranean. This particular specimen was taken in Crete in May of 2008. During a two week stay I saw hundreds if not thousands of specimens. At this time of year, most of the ones at warmer, lower altitudes had finished flowering. At around 500 metres above sea level perfect specimens could be found, whilst at 1000 metres many were still in bud.
The hood (spathe) surrounds the long, dark spadix and good specimens such as this one can be a metre tall. Not many flowers you really need a wide angle for! The flower smells of rotting flesh - it does this to attract flies which act as pollinators.
Kind Regards
