Mammoth Wasp (Scolia maculata) and Longhorn Beetle. Both these photos were taken on the same patch of thistles during a recent holiday to Crete. It wasn't until I looked at the pictures on my Mac that I realised the beetle is mimicking the wasp! Compare the markings on the beetle's thorax to those on the wasp's head and you will see what I mean.
Having done a little investigation it appears there are several longhorns that mimic different wasp species - examples of Batesian mimicry and parallel evolution. Mammoth Wasps are, as their name implies, huge insects. However, unless you disturb their nest they will not be interested in attacking you. I was less than 30cm away when taking these shots and as you can see all the wasp wanted to do was gorge on thistle pollen!
As yet I've been unable to identify the exact species of the Longhorn, so if anyone can help me out I'd be really grateful.
Kind Regards
