Little Bittern
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Little Bittern male (Ixobrychus minutus). This small member of the heron family is a secretive bird and spends most of the day hidden in thick reeds and other vegetation. They feed on fish, amphibians and large insects.
This picture was taken at the Ayia Reservoir, near Hania on the island of Crete. Although I couldn't see them all, there were quite a few Little Bitterns present - their strange booming calls were echoing around the water. They are to be found in reedy marshes across southern Europe, in the UK they are a rare Spring migrant.
Kind Regards

Vinny,
Great timing! I've seen a lot of shots of bitterns but I don't recall seeing one in action. Very nicely done! You've captured this one very well - the frozen water works really nicely here. Great details, colors and superb action. TFS.
BTW, did this bird manage to capture something on this try ?
Best Regards,
Martin
