Rana dalmatina - Agile frog
Its widely distributed east to Romania, absent from north Europe, Portugal and most of Spain (except Alava and Navarra in the Basque Country). Outside Europe it exists in north Asiatic Turkey, the Caucasus and north Iran.
Typically, its found in light broad-leaved woods where coloring matches dead leaves well. Found up to 1.700m but mainly in low altitudes in north. Often crepuscular or nocturnal but sometimes also seen during day.
Its an extremely agile frog capable of long leaps. Sometimes it may take to the water when pursued but its rather poor swimmer! Usually hibernates on land but underwater in Greece. |
