The praying mantis (Mantis religiosa) or European mantis is one of the most well-known and widespread species of the order Mantodea. Originating in southern Europe, the European mantis was introduced to North America in 1899 on a shipment of nursery plants. Now they are found all over north-eastern America (east of the Mississippi River) to the Pacific Northwest.
The European mantis is usually 2-3 inches in length, and has shades of bright green to tan. It can be distinguished easily by a black-ringed spot beneath the fore coxae. (Wikipedia)
--------------------------------------------------------
(Wikipedia)

Hello Catherine,
A fine capture of a European Mantis taken from an unusual upside-down POV with fine sharpness and lighting to show both the underside and the gripping claws well.
Another excellent macro from you and thanks for sharing it.
Have a good weekend,
Ivan

That is a very interesting shot, Catherine.
I like the way the curled-up leaves on top of the twig balance out the mantis below.
The monochromatic palette of this image is very pleasing.
Sharp details and good lighting, and very good pose of the mantis.
TFS. : )

Hello Catherine
What a magnificent capture of this Praying Mantis so sharp and clear. I like a lot the horizontal composition showing its 'belly', and the eye-contact.
Superb job.
My compliments and best regards
Maite
