Athene noctua
Family: Strigidae
The Little Owl is a bird which is resident in much of the temperate and warmer parts of Europe, Asia east to Korea, and north Africa.
This species is a part of the larger grouping of owls known as typical owls, Strigidae, which contains most species of owl.
The Little Owl is a small owl, 23-27.5 cm in length. It takes prey such as insects, earthworms, amphibians, but also small birds and mammals. It is partly diurnal and often perches prominently during the day.
This is a sedentary species which is found in open country such as mixed farmland and parkland. It usually nests in holes in trees or rocks, laying 3-5 eggs which are incubated by the female for 28-29 days, with a further 26 days to fledging. Little Owls will also nest in buildings, both abandoned and those fitted with custom owl nest boxes. If living in an area with a large amount of human activity, Little Owls may grow used to man and will remain on their perch, often in full view, while humans are around. (Wikipedia)
Photo taken in the village of Rahes or Christos Rahes, on Ikaria island, head of the municipality of Rahes. When the sun goes down, the numerous little owls wake up and begin to make many noises on the roofs of the village, including on abandoned houses (where they must be nesting). Curiously, the inhabitant of the village seems to be sleeping at day and wake up with the owls! This village is well know for its night life: taverns, shop… everything is open late at night.

La chevêche d'Athéna a les parties supérieures gris-brun, tachetées de blanc. Les parties inférieures sont blanchâtres, avec de larges stries gris-brun. La queue est brune, barrée de fines lignes constituées de taches blanches.
La tête est plate et ronde, de couleur brune, finement striée de gris pâle. La face est marquée de zones foncées sous les yeux. Les disques faciaux sont bordés de blanc. Les yeux sont jaunes avec un sourcil blanc évident. Le bec est verdâtre. Les pattes et les doigts sont emplumés, couverts de plumes chamois clair.
Les deux sexes sont semblables, avec la femelle légèrement plus grande que le mâle.
Le juvénile ressemble aux adultes, en plus terne et sans les stries claires sur la tête.
La chevêche d'Athéna vit dans des zones plates ou vallonnées de toutes sortes, les zones agricoles, les paysages avec des arbres dispersés, des terrains ouverts traversés de talus, murs de pierres ou pentes rocheuses. On les trouve aussi dans les vergers, les ruines, les villages, le semi-désert ou le désert. (Oiseaux.net)
Photo prise dans le village de Rahes ou Christos Rahes, chef-lieu de la municipalité de Rahes sur l'île d'Ikaria. Quand le soleil se couche, les nombreuses chouettes s’éveillent et commencent à faire beaucoup de bruit sur les toits du village, notamment sur ceux de maisons abandonnées (où elles doivent avoir leurs nids).
Curieusement, les habitants du village semblent endormis aussi la journée et s’éveillent avec les chouettes ! Ce village est bien connu pour sa vie nocturne : tavernes, magasins… tout est ouvert jusque tard dans la nuit. |
