When I shot this picture in Greece last year, I had no idea which species I was shooting, since I knew next to nothing about dragonflies and how to ID them.
Since I have begun visiting this site, I've come to learn much about these wonderful creatures, and I also know of places on the net where I can at least try and ID them.
Now, this species, and correct me if I am wrong, looks exactly like a Erythemis collocata or Western Pondhawk. I haven't found anything else that resembles this ID. Now, to my knowledge, these Pondhawks are not native to Europe. I know that there have been cases of migration noted ... but would I have been so lucky to capture one so randomly?
Does anyone know of another Dragonfly that resembles this one, and which is native to Europe? Comments would be muchly appreciated.

Hi Wendy!
Very interesting post! I'm not specialist but your Dragonfly looks exactly like one I photographed in Lodz, Poland. They live near ponds in Botanic Garden. It is the same specie for sure. I don't know if it was Western Pondhawk but I'm sure Paul or someone else will ID it.
BTW - very good photo - I like pose, composition, details.

Great shot!
It's an Orthetrum brunneum, a very common species in Portugal.
Great details and sharpness!
Very nice close-up, Wendy.
Well composed, nice colours, good POV and details.
Very well done.
