[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Eastern Festoon (Zerinthia cerisy cretica)is found as a subspecies on Crete. The nominate form has larger markings and is found in SE Europe and Turkey.
Festoons are relatives of Apollo butterflies which are classified as members of the Papilionidae that also include Swallowtails.
This individual was photographed on a cloudy day when it wasn't very active. It flew a short distance and landed on a crown-of-thorns bush where it was surprisingly hard to see at a distance.

Bravo et merci JP

Very good (but small) picture. Excellent colours and sharpness.
I have no picture of this species in my database. I'll be grateful if you would like to share with this picture there.

Chris

Hi Ivan,
I see that you've been in Iraklion. Where did you find this beauty? I haven't come across one of these, yet. Now that I saw it, I'd love to shoot a close-up this species someday. I'll be on the lookout for them.
TFS,
Stavros
