Into The Local Myco-History pt. II. - Treasure In The Park

Hello,

First of all: Happy 2009 to eyeryone.
I continue the new year where I finished the old: with a rare fungus specie. The main difference: although my yesterday upload, Fomitopsis rosea wasn't detected in Hungary before, it isn't a rare specie in Northern Europe, while this one, Rubinoboletus rubinus (= Chalciporus rubinus) is rare everywhere, but my detection isn't the local debut of it.

There are 7 species in Rubinoboletus genus, from which this is the only European specie, all others are tropical / subtropical. R. rubinus is on the local and also on the international Red List Of Fungi, in category 2 (EN, endangered).

Hat: yellowish brown, dry.
Pores: cherry-red.
Stem: the combination of the above mentioned colors.
Flesh: pale pink, in the lower part of the trunk yellow-ish.
Height: 2-4 centimeters.
Hat width: 3-6 centimeters.
Presence: from July to September, in deciduous forests. Mycorrhiza connection mostly with oak (Quercus) species, but other partners are also possible (the specimen on my image was connected to hornbeam - Carpinus betulus).
Edibility: edible, but due to it's very rare, please don't pick if You see it.
Similar species: the habit of Chalciporus amarellus is almost similar, but it's only growing in pine forests, under Picea, Abies and most importantly Pinus species, and is also rare. Another, critical (and also rare) specie is Chalciporus pseudorubinus, only under pines belonging to Pinus genus.

I found 2 specimens of Rubinoboletus rubinus on a very special day, 27th of July, 2008. It was special, because this is my father's birthday, I bought my Panasonic camera at 8:00 A. M. than, plus I found lots of fungi, including these ones in the city park named "People's Garden". Originally we went to the playgrounds with our children...

This was the 10th occasion this specie was detected in Hungary, and the 1st in the state / county I'm living in. And what a surprise: not in the mountains, but in a park in the city... ID specification by me, controlled macroscopically by Mr. Bálint Dima from Hungarian Mycological Association.

I dedicate this image to the memory of 2 men:
- to Mr. Gábor Bohus mycologist, who lived in the same city as I, and who died in 2005 at the age of 91. He was the first who detected this specie in Hungary in 1951.
- to Mr. László Balla, my member mate in Fungi Association of Miskolc, who died 3 days ago. Rest In Peace!

Hello Laszlo!

Another trophy to your collection and another very interesting post. I like very much Latin name of this specie. It also looks great. Good composition of picture with fungus covered by shadows and brighter BG. Good work again!

By the way - I was in your hunting area in '87 in small town of Leninvaros. Unfortunatelly I don't remember any fungi, but remember great swimming pools complex :-)

Hello Laszlo,
An excellent capture of this Rubinoboletus with good environmental feel.
A good dedication to these two Polish mycologists. I'm sorry to hear of the death of your friend Laszlo Balla.
Many of the people in our fungi and orchid clubs are very old too.
I hope to capture some big boletes for you in about 3 or 4 months.The big Austroboletus will be fuiting in March/April

sometimes when I lok at these fungi, I think how many millions shapes colours and so on. What a greatr creation. Like this one so unique and cute in its own way.
Well taken and well presented. I like this low angle as it depict the forest scene very well, and I feel being tranformed to a snail.

I love to see such old mushrroms, they look beautiful - worn-out but beautiful. I also like the composition and the low POV, allowing us to see the forest in the BG. Nice natural colors and excellent details, too. It was a very nice way to start the new year ! Very well done !
