[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hello,

Just came home from the arboretum of Miskolc, which we - believe it or not - visited for the 1st time today. The reason is simply the arboretum was very rarely opened in the past - now 3 times a week, for 4 hours per day, You can visit it for free. It's located on the Avas Hill (the "green heart" of our city), on 1,5 hectares only, but having the most rich collection of coniferal trees in Hungary. You can find over 900 trees / bushes in the (protected) area, almost 600 species or variants from the following generas:

- Cedrus: 12
- Abies: 36
- Picea: 39
- Pinus: 55
- Larix: 9
- Chamaecyparis: 136
- Juniperus: 173
- Taxus: 37
- Thuja: 96

Of course there are species and variants of monotypical generas or those which have very few species (Cryptomeria, Metasequoia, Sequoiadendron etc.), too.

I asked the horticulturist gentleman what kind of fungi are used to grow in the arboretum, because I'm sure there are many, and some of them might be quite rare - but he said he only knows Suillus grevillei under the larch (Larix) trees. So we agreed I, with my member mates from our Fungi Association of Miskolc can make mycological research on the territory. Dear Mr. Imre Adorján, I'd like to say thank You again for Your kindness.

Photo: after transferring the image to the PC, my wife said "this is a nice pic. Like a jungle" - so the title was born. :) Post-procession: gamma- and level correction. The conifer specie on the pic is Pinus ponderosa (the Bull Pine), a pine tree originating from Western North America, which is famous for its big cones and very long needles.

At the same time, this will be the opening pic of my new group theme Cones And "Coniferal Blooming" - feel free to add Your cone shots, Taxus berries are also accepted.

Hi Laslo,
I remember examining all the differen pine cones and needles at the botanical gardens in Christchurch.
Some needles of one tree curled round and round in knots and spirals.
I think it could be the same tree with pine nuts.
I was with the Dalai Lama thee one time when he planted a Himalayan Cedar in the gardens :)

Agree with your wife - this picture looks like taken in tropics. Very interesting note. Funny - I've got same situation. Here in Lodz we've got palm house which I visited few years ago for first time - till then I wasn't there - and I can't explain why :-) Anyway - as I wrote before - very good POV and composition turned Miskolc into tropical jungle :-)

This is an interesting pine variety that I don't think I saw before!
The long needles are quite amazing, and the small cones offer a pleasant colour contrast...
The varied light adds life to the scene, and I admire the sharp fine details!
