COMMENTS: This is one of my first birds picture taken with Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM. I took this picture in Budapest, over Danube, from a boat. I was so eager to see my new lens capabilities. Although my lens was sharper then my previous Tamron lens and much faster the final result was disappointing. It was just to much contrast that our primitive digital sensors can manage. The sky was to overexposed and desaturated and the bird was to underexposed.
What I learned from my first picture was that pushing the shutter is only the first step of a picture. Especially on bird photography, because you shoot very often in extreme contrasts.
When I arrived home I made two versions of the same image using software exposure compensation. One underexposed and more saturated for the sky and one overexposed for the bird. I combined them. The result was more satisfying and met the expectations I had at the moment I pushed the shutter button.
P.S. I posted the original file as workshop |
