The peacock butterfly is so called because the 'eyes' on its wings resemble those on a peacock's tail feathers. To a passing bird, the butterfly appears to be a much bigger animal. When at rest, the peacock butterfly's wings are closed and the underwings camouflaged to look like tree bark. If disturbed, peacock butterflies open their wings and produce a hissing sound.

Some butterfly wings have an iridescent shimmer because of the structure of the wing surface. Each microscopic scale has cuticle ridges that are layered and each layer reflects light like a thin film of oil on water to produce multiple colour reflections.

The iridescent eye spots on the peacock butterfly reflect different colours depending on the relative position of the viewer. Perhaps this adds to the deception that the 'eyes' belong to a larger animal.
