The Oystercatchers are a group of waders; they form the family Haematopodidae, which has a single genus, Haematopus. They are large obvious and noisy plover-like birds, with strong bills used for smashing or prising open molluscs.

In some species, the bill shape varies according to the diet. Those birds with blade-like bill tips prise open or smash mollusc shells, and those with pointed bill tips tend to probe for annelid worms.

They are found on coasts worldwide apart from the polar regions. They are all-black, black and white or brown and white in appearance.

Their eggs are laid in a shallow scrape on shingle. Oystercatcher eggs are grey and speckled, providing camouflage against the grey rock background. They are pointed at one end. Contrary to popular belief, the purpose of this is not to provide space for the chick's long beaks (their long beaks develop after hatching). The pointed shape is thought to prevent the eggs from rolling down a steep slope.

I could not get close enough to these birds to get decent portraits so I decided to make a collage with them. They look really cool in flight since they are so colourful.
They will feed on sports grounds and seaside. Here you can see them around such a sports field and above the river.

Hi Catalin,

I like your work, but I'm not sure this works as a triptych. The images just don't quite blend, nor play off each other. However the quality of each and the composition of each I feel would have been enough as an indiviual posting.

Ce prezentare frumoasa!
3 stagii complet distincte ca postura a animalelor si fiecare cu un BG pe masura, dar de culori diferite...superb!
Detaliile sunt foarte bune in taote cele 3 pozele, expunerea e ok si compozitia a excelenta.

Very nice composition of shots. I like a lot to observe oystercatchers although they are rare visitors in my area. I like the way you show them both in flight and while feeding, giving the opportunity to see all their identification features.
