drinker moth
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Latin name: Philudoria potatoria
Special features: The drinker moth gets its name from the caterpillars habit of drinking large droplets of rainwater or dew from the grass stems on which they feed.
Although the caterpillars are quite large and impressive, the moth itself is a plain brown colour with a wingspan of around 50mms. Drinker moths are fairly widespread throughout Britain.
The hairy caterpillars are often seen between April and June, and the moths normally start flying in July.
The yellowish females are slightly larger than the orange-brown male, but both sexes usually show the two distinctive white spots on the forewing.
The males especially are attracted to light.

Hi Catalin,
Sorry I can't help with an ID but it is a wonderful image of what appears to be a Butterfly. The quality is superb and it looks very interesting. I will have to call back later and see if you had any success with the id.
Cheers,
Debbie

Catalin, Beautiful color and nice shot of this insect. I really like the color. Ganesh
Hi Catalin,
Beautiful colours in the picture and the orange moth shows off very well against the green rushes.
The Moth just seems to be a little off sharp but there is plenty of definition there.
Well done,
Regards,
Peter
