Torc Waterfall, Killarney, Ireland.

This waterfall is a stunning display, falling 60 feet into a churning basin of rocks and foam. Legend has it that a bewitched young man created the waterfall. Under the charm of a cruel spell, he lived as handsome man by day, but was transformed into a boar each night. One night his secret was revealed and in his humiliation he became a ball of fire, bounced off the top of Mangerton Mountain, and plunged into the Devil's Punch Bowl.

This caused a great chasm in the side of the Devil's Punch Bowl and the resulting rush of water created Torc Waterfall.

Canon EOS 350D DIGITAL
Software: Adobe Photoshop CS2 Windows
Exposure Time: 4sec
F-Stop: f/14
ISO Speed Ratings: 100
Focal Length: 30/1 mm

Stephen you have captured the greens of Ireland very nicely in this picture. The 4 second exposure surpirses me at F/14.0. were you using an ND filter?, anyhow it has created a lovley efect of silk on the water.

I like the way you have kept the rocks in the foreground. It works exceptionally well.

I don't know what it is about the long exposures on waterfalls that makes them so appealing. It could be the soft appearance in contrast with the other surfaces (especially rocks), it could be the idea of capturing the fleeting into permanance. But I was at Yellowstone looking at the shots of William Henry Jackson taken about 100 years ago, when long exposures were necessary, and was struck by how timeless the shots look, especially those with running water. Funny.

Anyway, marvelous shot in that tradition. The extra set of falls in the bottom somehow moves the composition from the mundane to the spectacular, and I can't day why. But it's simply your eye, Stephen.

Wonderful story in the note, too, but I think you're at an unfair advantage being from such a verbal country with such a long history! In North American it would just be named something like "Horse Thief Falls" with no accompanying story. "Pity, that..." ;-)

Hi Stephen,
The waterfall swings trough the picture and you used the limits of the frame ( I mean the space you see in the "cadrage" when you look trough the lens) well to show the waterfall in it's different platforms: So the effect is a lively composition.

Preciosa imagen, el colorido es fantástico. Un bonito rincón de la bella Irlanda. GPC, Saludos Juan Luis.

Hi Steven!
Yes, you're absolutelly right - this waterfall is a stunning display! Silk effect always works with waterfalls, especially with help of hands of master like you. Amazing place and photo.

Great capture. This type of shot isn't as easy as most people think, you have to have everything just right, especially the light.
You've done a great job here. The POV and DOF is very good. Good use of long exposure.

Hi Steve,
Another excellent capture.
You have a very good eye for the shot, as always..Can I borrow it from time to time? :)
Lovely light and color..perfect framing. Excellent depth & FG detail as well..
The longer exposure always produces such a great effect seen in the water..
Very well done.

Hi Stephen,

Well done on this capture and composition. Nicely done.

Mike

Hey Stephen - I really like the effect of the 4 second shutter speed. It really added a nice touch to the water. TFS!

Extremely beautiful photograph, Stephen. I love the composition here. Keeping the rocks in the foreground has created something somewhat special and an interesting point of view, almost as if the viewer is sitting at the bottom of the rocks, looking up to the main section of the waterfall.

Great exposure and clarity. Love the vibrant colours.
