Scathophaga sp.

Latin name: Scathophaga stercoraria

Size: Approximately 10mms long

Distribution: Found throughout the Europe

Food: The adults feed on small insects on the dung. The larvae feed on dung.

Habitat: Pasture. Anywhere with horse, cow or sheep dung.

Special features: The males have bright yellow furry bodies. The females are slightly more dull coloured.

In early spring yellow dung-flies congregate on dung to mate and lay eggs. Their larvae feed and develop inside the dung.
