LARINUS STURNUS

Order: Coleoptera
Family: Curculionidae
Genus: Larinus
Specie: Larinus sturnus

Curculionidae is the family of the "true" weevils (or snout beetles). With over 60,000 species described worldwide, it is the largest of beetle families.

They are recognized by their distinctive long snout and geniculate antennae with small clubs; beyond that curculionids have considerable diversity of form and size, with adult lengths ranging from 1 to 40 mm.

Weevils are almost entirely plant feeders, and most species are associated with a narrow range of hosts, in many cases only living on a single species.

Hallo Ivan
Very interesting shaped insect. The face and eye is really remarkable and reminds me of all the funny creatures from some of the Sci-Fi movies. Just look at the funny looking mouth and eyes. The yellow and black patterns on the shield are actually in my opinion dull but on the other hand quite nice-looking. This insect's body and shield gives the impression that it is divided in three body parts. A good close-up, with odd details. Thanks for sharing. Kind regards
Anna

What an odd looking little bug! You have some wonderful detail on it- - with a nice dof as well. BG is perfect color for the composition. Great job! Penny

What a fantastic picture, I have never seen a macro with such details, darkness yet clarity. Nothing is shimmering or too bright, it has almost a 3D feel to it. My congratulations, this is really really a great picture, I like it. The insect is sharp and the background is so blurred and smooth. Thank you!

Francine

Hello Ivan,

Very nice picture of this weevil. Great sharpness. Very nice natural colours.
I tried a WS to reduce the noise of the background. I think the picture could be improved with more brightness and increase in contrast (I did not do it, I have not the best software for that).
Cheers,
Mariki

Ciao Ivan,
Che bell' insetto! A me tutti i Curculionidi ricordano dei piccoli mostricciattoli!
Cmq, la foto e ben dettagliata e l'insetto e messo ben a fuoco!
Saluti

Hi Ivan

Good shot of this weevil about to take off. Good sharpness and DOF.

Chris

Ciao Ivan,
molto bella questa foto, considerando la difficoltà fotografica che presentano questi curculionidi, sempre attorniati da foglie spinose e difficilissimi da mettere a fuoco.
Qui sei riuscito a portarlo bene allo scoperto e il risultato è ottimo.
Ciao,
Marcello
