Vespa crabro LINNAEUS, 1761
calabrone



Il calabrone (Vespa crabro LINNAEUS, 1761) è il più grosso Vespide europeo.
In Italia è la specie con la maggiore diffusione su tutto il territorio. È ben distinguibile per le sue dimensioni che arrivano fino a 3,5 cm (più del doppio rispetto alla vespa cartonaia). I nidi detti vespai hanno un'architettura voluminosa e si trovano solitamente nei tronchi cavi. Il periodo più delicato per i soggetti allergici è durante la vendemmia, quindi dalla fine dell'estate per quasi tutto l'autunno. Questo perchè come le vespe polistes, i calabroni sono attirati dalle sostanze zuccherine e dalla frutta di cui si nutrono. La puntura è particolarmente dolorosa.
