The Lesser Purple Emperor, or Apatura ilia, is a species of butterfly native to most of Europe and Asia. It is named for its similarity to the Purple Emperor butterfly.
It is found in woodlands as well as throughout Central Europe and southern Britain. Adults have dark brown wings with white lines and a small orange ring on each of the hindwings. Males have an iridescent purple-blue sheen which the females lack. The caterpillars are green with white and yellow markings and have two large horns.
Females spend most of their lives in the tree canopy coming down only to lay their eggs. Males also spend much of their time in the tree tops, defending their territory from rivals, though they will sometimes descend in order to drink from puddles or feed. Unlike most butterflies, the purple emperor does not feed from flowers but instead on the honeydew secreted by aphids and on dung, urine and animal carcasses.
Eggs are laid in late summer on the upper side of sallow leaves. They prefer the leaves of the broad-leaved sallow. After hatching, the caterpillars will lie on the midrib of the leaf where they are well camouflaged, and feed only at night. During the winter they hibernate in the forks of sallow branches where they change colour from green to brown in order to match their surroundings. The following June they will form a pale green chrysalis that resembles a leaf shoot. The adult will then usually emerge in mid-July.

La farfalla Iride (Apatura ilia Linnaeus, 1758) è una farfalla appartenente alla famiglia Nymphalidae.I maschi posseggono brillanti sfumature viola-porpora, che non sono dovute a pigmenti chimici, come avviene nella maggior parte delle farfalle, ma a fenomeni fisici di diffrazione e interferenza della luce; per questo motivo cambiano a seconda dell'angolo di incidenza dei raggi luminosi. Entrambi i sessi sono caratterizzati da una colorazione marrone-scura sulle pagine inferiori, linee bianche e un anello arancione su ogni ala posteriore. Le femmine sono generalmente più grandi e presentano disegni più estesi.
La lunghezza delle ali anteriori oscilla tra i 33 e i 42 mm.
I bruchi sono invece verdi con bande gialle e bianche e con due corni.È una specie sciafila (che vive nell'ombra).
Le femmine trascorrono la maggior parte della loro vita sui rami, scendendo a terra solo per depositare le uova. Anche i maschi trascorrono la maggior parte della propria vita sulle cime degli alberi, difendendo il loro territorio dai rivali, sebbene discendano di tanto in tanto per bere dalle pozze fangose o per nutrirsi.
Il bruco vive invece sull'olivello spinoso in agosto/settembre e nuovamente in maggio/giugno dopo l'ibernazione. Esiste una sola generazione annuale con sfarfallamento nelle vicinanze del mese di luglio.
A differenza della maggior parte delle farfalle, l'Apatura iris si nutre di sostanze zuccherine secrete dagli afidi, di fiori di rovo, di urina e di carogne.
Abita nelle regioni meridionali dell'Inghilterra e in gran parte dell'Europa centro-orientale.
In Italia si ritrova nelle regioni settentrionali, nei boschi e nelle radure del piano basale e montano tra i 500 e 1.900 m slm, specie dove abbonda la quercia.

Interessante farfalla, con una bella struttura, molto ben rappresentato. Mi piace un sacco di queste foto con lo sfondo pieno di foglie e gli elementi del suolo. Questo splendido risultato e si dispone di un livello veramente buono il contrasto.

Ciao Luciano, bellezza un po' malconcia, ma ancora si difende bene, ottima macro ben dettagliata e nitida, stamattina ho fatto i chilometri dietro a due lasiommate che st'estate manco le guardavo, volavano in coppia le maledette e sai che significa, ne ho beccata una e malamente, la psto domani, potrebbe essere l'ultima della stagione, poi si torna ad aprire il frigo, buona settimana, ciao Silvio

quest'anno ho avuto un solo incontro,anche se prolungato, con questa splendida farfalla ad inizio stagione; forse questo soggetto è lo stesso con i colori molto chiari che hai presentato ad ali aperte, la colorazione anche del lato inferiore è tenue e delicata, ottima definizione, la composzione è molto bella e "vertiginante"
