The Safflower Skipper (Pyrgus carthami) is a species of skipper (family Hesperiidae). It is a widespread species of continental Europe but is absent from northern France, Holland, the British Isles and Scandinavia. It frequents meadows and other grassy places and in some parts of its range is fairly common. The wingspan is 30-34 mm, the female being on average slightly larger than the male. This species is typical of the genus, with dark brown wings marked with paler spots, and can be difficult to separate from its congeners. It is most often confused with the Large Grizzled Skipper (P. alveus) as the two species are often found in similar habitats. P. carthami can usually be separated from this species by the more closely grouped white spots on the forewing and a band of evenly sized pale spots in the postdiscal area of the hindwing. The underside of the hindwing is usually strongly marked with large pale spots with characteristic dark edges. The adult is on the wing from June until September. A single generation is produced each year, the larva feeding on Alcea and Malva species.

Accidenti che macro! Conoscendo le dimensioni del fiore della Stellaria Media resto stupefatto da tanta nitidezza,anche l'angolazione insolita e' davvero azzeccata,qualita' da gran maestro! Buona giornata,Luciano. p.s. non so se hai visto le foto che ha scelto la giuria del concorso che ti avevo indicato come finaliste,mai visti degli imbrogli cosi' evidenti e delle foto cosi' brutte....e tutte taroccate al pc come non consentito dal regolamento..ehehe..ciao.

una prospettiva molto dinamica con una perfetta messa a fuoco, colori ben saturati e ottima definizione, sarei curioso di sapere se l'ID Pirgus carthami è frutto anche di altre immagini (a proposito di ID avevo azzeccato il nome giusto della coccinella e Joska te l'aveva suggerito con un errore "di stampa")

Ciao Roberto,
A fine capture of a female Pyrgus species taken from an unusual POV that shows details of the head and body with fine sharpness in a nice composition on the white flower against a fine neutral natural BG.
I'm not sure of the ID as the wings are not clearly seen from this angle. I cannot confirm that this is carthami but it is an interesting image.
