The Beautiful Demoiselle (Calopteryx virgo) is a European damselfly. It is often found among fast-flowing waters.
The male has dark brown-black wingtips with blue veins. Immature insects often have much paler, browner wings. They have metallic blue-green bodies and blue-green eyes.
The female has dark brown iridescent wings, a white patch near the tip of the wings and a metallic green body with a bronze tip of the abdomen.
Females lay up to 300 eggs at a time on emergent or floating plants, often on water-crowfoot. Like the Banded Demoiselle, they often submerge to do so. The eggs hatch after around 14 days. Again, like the Banded Demoiselle, the larva is stick-like with long legs and develops over a period of two years in submerged vegetation, plant debris or roots. They usually overwinter in mud or slime.
Males are territorial, perching in bankside plants and trees. They chase passing insects, often returning to the same perch. Males can stray well away from water, females live away from water unless egg-laying or seeking a mate.


La Calopteryx virgo Linnaeus, 1758, è un insetto della famiglia Calopterygidae (Odonata: Zygoptera).Gli adulti presentano livree eleganti, con colorazioni metalliche differenti nei due sessi. Il maschio ha ali brune e corpo azzurro metallico, colorazione che si estende anche ad alcune nervature longitudinali. La femmina ha ali brune e corpo bruno-verdastro con riflessi iridescenti.
La morfologia è quella tipica degli Zygoptera: il capo è dicoptico e le ali anteriori sono uguali, nella forma e nello sviluppo, a quelle posteriori. In posizione di riposo sono reciprocamente accostate e tenute verticali. Le larve sono provviste di tre lobi respiratori caudali.
Come in tutti gli Zygoptera, è un mediocre volatore e l'ovideposizione è endofitica.
In Italia sono presenti due sottospecie: Calopteryx virgo padana, presente solo nel Nord Italia, e Calopteryx virgo meridionalis, diffusa in tutto il territorio nazionale.

Ton image est superbe. Ces deux demoiselles prêtes au décollage, c'est si bien vu. La double présence de l'insecte rend l'image extraordinaire. En plus, tu l'as très bien réussie sur le plan technique et bien accompagnée de notes intéressantes.

una bellissima composizione per queste due Calopterix virgo in cui hai privilegiato la scelta prospettica della profondità lasciando spazio in alto a sinistra (si prestava anche ad una soluzione simmetrica diagonale), buona definizione e ben contenuto il contrasto di luce, molto belli i colori e splendida la superficie dell'acqua che fa da sfondo.
