The White-legged Damselfly (Platycnemis pennipes) is a damselfly of slow-flowing, muddy waters. It is much more restricted in range than the Banded Demoiselle which it invariably accompanies.Mature adults differ from most other blue damselflies in having expanded white edges to the tibiae, paired black markings down most of the abdomen, broad pale brown antehumeral stripes and a pale brown pterostigmata.
The male has a blue abdomen that is often pale and usually has a greenish thorax.
The female is a very pale yellow-green colour with black markings.This species favours unshaded slow-flowing sections of muddy rivers with abundant floating vegetation. it has been recorded in tidal rivers and the larvae seem well able to tolerate brackish water. It also occurs in muddy streams but is rare in lakes or ponds of any sort.
Mating is preceded by the male displaying his white legs. Elongated eggs are laid whilst in tandem, into emergent stems and especially the underside of floating leaves. The larvae live amongst bottom debris and emerge after two years.After emerging, adults tend to congregate in the shelter of tall vegetation, although some immatures wander away from water and have been found five kilometres away from the nearest breeding site.

Hi Luciano

Wow, have they no shame (chuckle). In human terms this would have been unaccepted behaviour, but with these damselflies it is a rare moment, a valuable sighting and an excellent capture.

I am of the opinion that the outstanding result does not reveal the difficult circumstances you might have experienced to nail this shot. Good lighting control and great details.

A wonderful capture of intense reproductive activity!
These pairs of P. pennipes are clearly shown against the dark water with fine sharpness and lighting in a pleasing composition.
You should have some to photograph next summer!

quando ho visto questa immagine ho pensato "Luciano mi costringe a pubblicare quelle di cui avevo parlato nel mio precedente commento altrimenti penserà ad un bluff" allora mi sono deciso, ma le sei coppie le pubblico solo in WS. Anche questa un'immagine di ottimo impatto visivo e giocata ancor più sui contrasti di luce, i riflessi questa volta si perdono un po', ottimo il taglio compositivo anche se a causa della prospettiva c'è un'impercettibile caduta verso destra.

Une image presque mystérieuse avec ce ballet de demoiselles à la coloration bien pâle et qui se reflètent dans l'eau pour mieux nous impressionner. Une image très originale et très bien exécutée.

Tu me fais souvent des compliments en parlant de moi comme étant un artiste. Cette image que tu nous présentes aujourd'hui est la preuve, parmi d'autres d'ailleurs, que tu l'es autant. L'impact artistique crée par la lumière et la composition est superbe. Les réflections, netement moins présentes que leur "originaux", ajoutent clairement à la valeur de l'image.
