LONGHORN BEETLES / Coleoptera, Cerambycidae


Rutpela maculata (Poda, 1761)

Length. 13-20 mm.

Diagnostic features. Head and pronotum black; elytra yellow with apex black and whit variable black pattern of patches and transverse stripes; front and middle legs predominantly yellow, hind femur often black with base yellow, tibia yellow with apex black, all tarsi black; antennal segments 3 to 11 bicolorous black and yellow.

Distribution. This elegant species, a typical flower visitor, is one from the most common European longhorn beetles. Widely distributed in Europe, Turkey, Caucasus, Transcaucasia, North Iran.

Biology. Polyphagous in deciduous trees (Quercus, Fagus, Carpinus, Salix, Alnus, Populus, Betula, Corylus etc.) and occasionally in conifers (Pinus, Picea, Abies). Life-cycle 2 or 3 years, with pupation in spring or early summer in the wood. Adults emerge in May-July, on flowers.

a parte l'insetto abbastanza comune,e' la qualita' della foto che colpisce,i dettagli dell'insetto e del cuore del fiore sono impressionanti...d'altra parte e' tua...un nome una garanzia,ciao Luciano

Buongiorno Marcello,
... the next perfect picture of your collection! I see, you avoided direct bright sunlight (and polarization filter) so that no disturbing reflections on the beetle's surface occur. Great depth of field embracing also large parts of the flower. Antennae and leg details are well shown.

I am sure your close-up picture is simply outstanding. I am amazed with subject, brilliant composition and great DOF. You managed to place all flower and insect in focus. Details of the beetle and flower are high end as well as the reproduction of the white petal. Excellent refined work. My compliments and TFS.
