Sooty Copper, Heodes tityrus
I came across this male Sooty Copper today in an Alpine meadow in Italy at an elevation of 1460m. In Butterflies of Britain and Europe, Higgins and Riley suggest describe two subspecies in this area, H. t. tityrus and H. t. subalpinus, and I am uncertain which this is. It is clearly a few weeks old and this would suggest the early brood of tityrus rather than the single brood of subalpinus, which they suggest flies from the end of June.
I have also a picture of the underside and will post this another day.
