Erebria triaria Underside
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
A few days ago I posted a photograph of the upperside of an Erebia species which Peter Roos kindly identified for me as E. triaria. I returned on Saturday to the same spot in Sestriere in order to capture a postable shot of the underside, as I had not managed this earlier in the week.
This time it was later in the day and much hotter, so the insects were much less prone to sit still for the photographer. After a while waiting, I did manage to get this picture of a slightly worn specimen, but it does show the characteristic dark underside.
While waiting to get this shot, I also got a picture of the underside of another Erebia, which has more marked patterning underneath and may turn out to be E. meolans as which I first mis-identified this species. I will post that tomorrow, if I get the chance.
As well as the usual cropping and resizing, I have somewhat lightened the shadows on this image so the the underside patterning is more visible than in the original file. Thus the BG, too, is a little over-exposed. I have done this in the name of showing the identifying characters of the insect. |
