Hamearis lucina, the Duke of Burgundy Fritillary

Hamearis lucina is the sole European representative of the butterfly family Riodinidae, sometimes also referred to as Nemeobiidae. Other authrities have gone so far as to include them as a sub-Family of the Lycaenidae.

This butterfly has two broods in the southern part of its range and flies from May to August. Further North there is a single brood flying in May and June. This is a first brood male from the Piedmontese Alps in Italy, taken in June and showing already some wing damage.

The picture was taken in a flower meadow close to the lake at Moncenisio. The elevation is about 1400m. The shot was hand-held with fill-in flash and has been cropped, resized and selectively sharpened for TN.

Hello Alan,
As Nagraj said - it's a little bit strange POV but the picture is sharp enough. Also the colours are great. TFS
