Le Charaxinae (Guenée, 1865) sono farfalle a volo rapido che si nutrono di frutta. A tale sottofamiglia appartengono circa 400 specie, che vivono prevalentemente nella fascia tropicale dell’Africa. Alle nostre latitudini vive una sola specie, che compete tranquillamente per bellezza con quelle tropicali.

Non sorprende quindi che questa farfalla in Italia viva solo nelle regioni costiere più calde, con macchia mediterranea intatta, come Liguria, Toscana, Sardegna e lungo la costa tirrenica meridionale. È più rara sull'Adriatico, soprattutto a Nord, dove non supera le Marche.

La Ninfa del corbezzolo o Jasio, maestoso Ninfalide, può raggiungere e superare gli 80 mm. di apertura alare ed è una fra le più belle farfalle diurne europee.

La livrea comune a entrambi i sessi, è un mosaico unico di colori, soprattutto sulla pagina inferiore delle ali: un delicato grigio-bruno traversato da fasce d'argento, con riflessi verdi, azzurri e guarnizioni nere, arancioni, blu e bianche. La pagina superiore delle ali, che presentano due "code", è invece rosso-bruno metallico scuro con una serie di bande arancioni e blu che percorrono il margine posteriore.
Il dimorfismo sessuale non è evidente ed è limitato ad una piccola differenza di dimensioni, in cui la femmina è leggermente più grande.

Ha due caratteristiche che la rendono interessante ed unica.

La prima peculiarità riguarda il suo particolare comportamento: si vede spesso volteggiare sulle cime degli alberi con un volo possente e rapido. Tale comportamento è dovuto alla sua spiccata territorialità, che la rende particolarmente combattiva ed aggressiva, specialmente nel periodo riproduttivo.
Ciascun individuo, soprattutto di sesso maschile, difende e sorveglia un territorio molto vasto.
Per farlo, alterna a brevi momenti in cui sta posato all’estremità di rametti di Arbustus unedo (corbezzolo), altri periodi, più o meno lunghi, in cui parte in un volo di perlustrazione per individuare eventuali intrusi che vengono cacciati via con notevole accanimento. A volte questa farfalla si lancia in lunghi inseguimenti dietro agli avversari, ed è stata osservata ad inseguire addirittura piccoli uccelli e, in alcuni casi, compiere innocue picchiate sulle persone per scoraggiarle ad entrare nel suo territorio.

La seconda caratteristica è la sua presenza in un solo ambiente, tipico delle nostre latitudini: la macchia mediterranea, che accoglie anche la sua unica pianta nutrice, il bellissimo corbezzolo (Arbutus unedo).

Questa farfalla non è facile da fotografare, in quanto non si lascia avvicinare facilmente, ma, sfruttando le sue abitudini territoriali, si può attenderla con pazienza sul “posatoio” (una tecnica molto utile anche per fotografare le libellule).

Si potrebbe sfruttare un altro “vizietto” di questa bellissima farfalla, a cui i fiori, anche i più colorati, dicono poco o nulla, ma che è attratta in modo particolare dai liquidi zuccherini, dalla frutta fermentata e dagli alcolici. L’entomologo Enrico Stella che, in un documentario eccezionale, ha mostrato la Ninfa del corbezzolo in tutto il suo splendore e ha spiegato come si fa ad attirarla: basta posare da qualche parte, nella macchia dove ha i suoi rifugi, un bicchierino di birra o di vino. Lei arriva subito e srotola la sua proboscide per tuffarla nel liquido che la inebria.
E’ ovvio che un fotografo naturalista non deve commettere tale scorrettezza. Al massimo si può cercare di attirarla con della frutta molto matura e zuccherina. (Personalmente ho avuto modo di fare centinaia di foto a diverse individui senza alcun tipo di esca, ma solo sfruttando la sua territorialità e i momenti di posa).

La fotografia
E’ stata scattata con il teleobiettivo 300 mm., con misurazione della luce spot, regolazione manuale di tempo e diaframma. Ho deciso di inserire questa immagine, perchè sono influenzato da aspetti emotivi, in quanto si tratta del mio primo approccio fotografico con questa farfalla. La fotografia è stata scattata sulla spiaggia dell’isola di Spargi (Arcipelago della Maddalena), una posa inusuale, dovuta alla probabile presenza di umidità sotterranea di acqua dolce (il punto della spiaggia corrispondeva ad un piccolo convogliamento di acque piovane, con presenza effettiva di terra bagnata più a monte) o alla possibile presenza di sostanze zuccherine lasciate dai bagnanti.
Questa farfalla è stata presentata su TN poche volte e nel 2008 viene presentata lo stesso giorno due volte, anche se per me rimane una prima assoluta.

Hi my dear friend Maurizio,
What a beauty? ıt has a wonderful pattern with splendid colours. I have not seen this before. You captured it in a fine composition with great clarity. The Englis name is also interesting because the "pasha" is a Turkish word (Paşa)meaning a a high rank in the Ottoman Empire political system. Anyway many thanks for sharing this beauty.

I think this is the first time I have seen this butterfly. A wonderful macro showing off this beautiful Two Tailed Pasha and it's marvelous markings. The colors are deep and rich and the details are superb.

excellent picture of this shy butterfly. You brought it just in the right focus plane
to show its beautiful wing pattern. The background lets stand out the butterfly clearly.
Noise reduction in the upper part of the picture would have smoothed the background.

I missed this beauty. It must have been in the time I have been packing to go on vacation.
