Satiridi
In Europa la famiglia dei Satiridi è la famiglia di farfalle diurne più rappresentata (circa 100 specie, in Italia circa 70). Il gruppo veniva un tempo aggregato ai Ninfalidi, per via del primo paio di zampe subatrofico, ma altri importanti caratteri anatomici hanno deposto a favore della creazione di una nuova famiglia.

Gli adulti, di dimensioni varie, hanno colorazione bruno o giallastra. Presentano dimorfismo sessuale e spesso nell’ala anteriore hanno nervature rigonfie, che fanno pensare a camere di risonanza di un apparato ricettore sonoro. La presenza di ocelli postdiscali sulle ali è una costante (numero e grandezza sono estremamente variabili).

I bruchi, nudi o pelosi, presentano un’appendice caudale bifida; due minuscoli cornetti possono essere presenti sul capo. Si nutrono prevalentemente di Graminace. Le crisalidi sono sospese, ma anche libere e ipogee. L’impupamento è breve e i primi a comparire sono i maschi.

La facilità di individuazione in volo è spesso compensata dalle qualità mimetiche quando sono posati. La loro capacità di adattamento ha consentito un’ampia distribuzione, pur non essendo farfalle migratorie. Alcune specie arrivano a 3000 metri sulle Alpi e anche all’estremo Nord.

Le più belle si trovano nelle foreste tropicali (ad esempio Callitaera e Hetaerina con ali trasparenti). In Italia in genere sono più dimesse con colorazione prevalentemente bruna ad eccezione delle Galatea, che presenta colore di fondo bianco con disegni neri.

Hipparchia aristaeus
Il satiride Hipparchia aristaeus è diffusa solo in Sardegna, in Corsica e nell’Arcipelago Toscano (Isole di Capraia, d’Elba e del Giglio). Endemismo sardo per la prima volta su TN. In Sicilia vi è una ssp. Hipparchia aristaeus blachieri marcellr. Nel mediterraneo esistono altri endemismi di Hypparchia: ad esempio Hipparchia cypriensis

E’ un satiride di medie dimensioni dalla livrea di colore arancio con ampio bordo marginale e nervature grigie. Le ali anteriori hanno una sfumatura grigiastra ed un’estesa macchia androconiale grigia, una macchia apicale nera pupillata di bianco tra la prima e la seconda nervatura mediana, accompagnata da una macchia più piccola tra la prima e la seconda cubitale. Le ali posteriori hanno una velatura grigiastra che lascia scoperto lo spazio postdiscale compreso tra la prima mediana e la seconda cubitale e una macchia ocellare nera tra le due nervature cubitali. Le parti inferiori mostrano un disegno più tenue sulle ali anteriori, mentre sulle posteriori si evidenzia una trama mimetica dalle tonalità grigio-chiare e scure, tipico del genere Hipparchia e in questo caso molto simile alla specie Hipparchia semele.

Ha un'unica generazione annuale con sfarfallamenti in luglio e agosto. Frequenta boschi, radure e pendici scoperte del piano basale e montano fino a circa 1600 metri s.l.m.

Superficially extremely similar to the Grayling, H. semele. This species replaces semele in the extreme south of Europe in Greece, Sicily (partial range overlap), Sardinia, Corsica and north Africa. The male genitalia are different. The best way to separate these species is to recognise in which range the butterfly was found! In Greece there is another species that it very closely resembles - Delattin's Grayling, H. volgensis.
In Greece this butterfly is of the subspecies senthes, although I believe some people treat this as a full species in its own right. The fact that the entire Hipparchia group appears to be subject to much debate and appears to be in state of speciation throughout its range, I leave it to the members of my audience to make their own choices! La fotografia
E’ stata scattata sull’Isola di Spargi con il teleobiettivo 300 mm., con misurazione della luce spot e regolazione manuale del tempo e del diaframma ed integrazione del flash per schiarire ed utilizzare un diaframma più chiuso. L’identificazione di questa farfalla diventa facile in Sardegna, in quanto l’Hipparchia semele non è presente. Ho comunque scattato una fotografia della farfalla in volo (non di qualità), in cui si riconosce la diversa livrea della parte superiore delle ali.

I see these from time to tim3e posted as imaged on the ground. It makes a good cover for them but adds an intriguing complexity to the image as a whole. Nicely done!

A fine macro of H. aristaeus taken from a great POV showing the markings and characteristics sharply against a camouflaged BG. I have never seen this species in real life so its nice to see this fine macro of it.

Hi Maurizio,

This Southern Grayling would be so well cammouflaged if not for the bright orange. If the wings were closed he would blend in perfectly with the ground. Beautiful colors and details. A wonderful POV and composition.

Wonderful shot of this mud-puddling butterfly and interestingly its lower wings are perfectly camouflaged. Great light handling and the image is tack sharp with lovely colours. Excellent DOF, POV and composition.
