Gli occhi sono formati da tanti piccoli occhi, ciascuno vede una parte dell’oggetto osservato e insieme ricostruiscono l'immagine. Le antenne sono utili per orientarsi nell’ambiente e per avvertire la presenza di predatori che si trovino anche molto lontani e quindi grazie ad esse può mettersi in salvo presto. Inoltre sono sensibili al calore ed all’umidità e vengono usate per annusare e per gustare. Non hanno gli orecchi, ma come si è detto un apparato uditivo addominale

Le ali anteriori, modificate, coprono il secondo paio di ali ripiegate a riposo sotto di esse. Come tutti gli insetti, le cavallette hanno sei zampe, ognuna suddivisa in quattro parti principali. Hanno lunghe zampe posteriori che distendono come l’asta di un atleta, consentendo loro di fare salti nell’aria.

Le cavallette compiono una sola generazione l’anno. Le neanidi nascono scalarmente dalla fine di maggio alla fine di luglio, in funzione dell’altitudine e dell’esposizione. I primi adulti compaiono in luglio e si spostano in volo per brevi distanze. L’ovideposizione inizia in agosto in aree circoscritte, dette grillare, caratterizzate da terreni incolti, compatti, esposti a sud e dotati di pendenza, quindi meno soggetti a ristagni idrici. Le uova sono deposte in un numero variabile da 25 a 55, all’interno di una ooteca (o cannello), sono sovrapposte le une alle altre ed incollate da un secreto spugnoso. Ogni ooteca viene inserita all’interno di un foro prodotto nel terreno dalla femmina alla profondità di 3-4 cm.

Le femmine di locusta depongono le uova in autunno, all'interno di buchi scavati nel terreno con l'estremità dell'addome; le uova si schiudono in primavera e gli individui giovani raggiungono la maturità in luglio o agosto. Specie normalmente non migratrici, possono diventare tali per necessità, ad esempio in caso di sovrappopolazione.
Usando uno speciale organo allungato robusto ed appuntito, detto ovopositore, la femmina depone le uova fecondate sotto la corteccia di un albero o nel fusto di una pianta. In primavera le uova si schiudono e lo sviluppo dal primo stadio larvale alla forma adulta avviene attraverso una metamorfosi di tipo incompleto: questo significa che le forme giovanili, appena uscite dall'uovo, hanno già l'aspetto dell'insetto adulto, salvo che per le dimensioni ridotte e per l'assenza di ali.
Per raggiungere le dimensioni d’un adulto, la ninfa deve compiere 5-6 mute, liberandosi del vecchio esoscheletro che riveste il suo corpo ma che non può crescere, e sostituendolo con uno più grande.

Le cavallette si rinvengono negli ambienti più disparati, dal livello del mare fino a quote molto elevate. L'alimentazione è molto varia e per alcuni è rappresentata unicamente da vegetali; in realtà una buona parte di esse si nutre sia di vegetali che di resti animali; qualche gruppo è decisamente carnivoro.

Appartiene alla famiglia Acrididae ed anche questa locusta ha la bella caratteristica striatura degli occhi, come l’Eyprepocnemis plorans e altre due specie della sottofamiglia Eyprepocnemidinae, Heteracris annulosa e Heteracris adspersa.
Le dimensioni del maschio di locusta egiziana 30-55 mm sono, come in quasi tutte le cavallette, inferiori a quelle della femmina 45-70 mm. E’ una specie grande e robusta dalla colorazione grigio-ocra. Il pronoto è pubescente e presenta dorsalmente una cresta arancione. La locusta egiziana è presente in tutta l’area del Mediterraneo ed in Italia è presente sia nella penisola che nelle isole. Vive, posata su alberi ed arbusti, in ambienti caldi e luminosi.
Gli adulti, completate tutte le trasformazioni, sono presenti in agosto e settembre, poi, dopo l’accoppiamento, svernano in luoghi riparati, anche nei pressi delle abitazioni.

La fotografia
E’ stata scattata con la mia solita tecnica di ripresa con il 300mm, nei pressi di uno degli stagni di S. Teodoro e precisamente nella zona interna della spiaggia denominata “la Cinta”.
Questa locusta egiziana pur essendo stata fotografata verso la fine di agosto non ha ancora raggiunto lo stadio di adulto, come si vede dalla colorazione verde (si notano solo delle piccole zone beige in via di trasformazione) con punti giallo-neri e dal semplice abbozzo di ali. E’ evidente anche la cresta gialla, che nell’adulto sarà arancione.

superb! The light, the colours, the sharpness and the resulting nicely visible detzails are amazing.
The background also contrasts perfectly. I think it would have been possible to apply a slightly smaller aperture
to achieve more sharpness of the left hindleg and parts of the abdomen. Background and exposure time had allowed it.

The green of the body is just beautiful,

Fantastic image of a wonderful and unknown me grasshopper. Its details and sharpness as well as exactness and richness of colours are ultimate. Plant is so wonderful and reproduced greatly. Bravo. Perfect shot. Looking your amazing pictures I am waiting for ordered 300 mm lens with great impatience. However, in our conditions I am not sure that I will get the order. Unfortunately, 80-200 lens works very badly in macro mode. It is its native feature.

Such a beautiful looking nymph with characteristic Anacridium eyes Maurizio, this lateral PV is perfect for displaying this fine specimen in perfect focus with a relatively shallow DOF my friend, job of an expert indeed!
